About CLP

THEIR DEAF HISTORY IS OUR HISTORY

As Codas, this is our legacy. The Coda Legacy Project approaches Coda lives from a strengths-based, culturally and linguistically responsive perspective. Deafness, Deaf parents, ASL, Deaf culture, and growing up in a Deaf family are not presumed to be deficits, adverse childhood experiences, or causes of pathology. We seek to understand the full Coda experience—language, culture, family, Deaf community, joy, belonging, responsibility, discrimination, access, agency, identity, skills, resilience, history, and intergenerational legacy. We do not presume an experience was traumatic, burdensome, beneficial, or harmful. We invite people to tell us what happened and what it meant to them.

Our Mission

The Coda Legacy Project, founded by Joy Plote, honors Deaf and Coda narratives. Our mission is to promote language justice, education, and intergenerational connections. Our history is intertwined.

OUR ROOTS

HONORING THE VISION

Founded by Joy Plote, The Coda Legacy Project carries forward Dorothy Watts’s 2009 vision: protect Deaf and Coda histories, center storyteller agency, and preserve stories with consent, accessibility, and care.
